Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette

The sanctuary of Notre Dame de la Salette is an important pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary in France, welcoming every year tens of thousands pilgrims, from all over the world.

History of La Salette

The 19th September 1846, two children out off Corps, Melanie et Maximin, shepherds in the pastures, glimpse a beautiful lady crying in a brilliant glimmer. She passes them a message about reconciliation and hope "for her people". In 1851, the bishop of Grenoble officialised this event as an apparition of the Virgin Mary. This decision allows the building of the sanctuary and a hotel in order to welcome pilgrims.

An international pilgrimage

Nowadays, the sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-La-Salette has a worldwide renown. Every year, tens of thousands pilgrims and visitors climb up the mountain to discover its history and the Virgin message, and benefit from welcoming, liturgical proposal and other activities (retreat, spiritual hikes, geological outings, concerts, thematic week-ends, local heritage day…), visits of the site : the museum, the basilica with its contemporary religious art (Arcabas works).
